Twenty-five years ago, nonviolent protesters shocked the Establishment in Seattle by shutting down the Seattle round of the World Trade Organization (WTO) talks. DW Gibson has just published an oral history of the event, One Week to Change the World

A key message of the book is why the protests in Seattle were so effective at making change. Gibson gleans through his interviews that the “outside” Street Heat coupled with and complementary to an “inside strategy” of moving the institutions, facilitated significant change at a level that street protests alone could not have achieved.

DW Gibson and journalist John NicholsNational Affairs Correspondent for The Nation magazine will talk about the current political climate and how the lessons learned in the protests surrounding the WTO meetings might be useful today.

Can the organizing and narrative around the protests at Chicago DNC be similarly broadened so that more people will participate and make those protests more effective at moving the Democratic Party on Peace issues, particularly around Israel/Gaza?
